DR REBECCA BAILLIE
CAVE PAINTINGS
Everyday in this exact location throughout her formative childhood years, artist Rebecca Baillie would ‘check the pigs’. As routine, from as young as three years old she watched countless pigs give birth, whilst always walking past a pile of dead ones on the way; it is the smell of both experiences that clings most vividly.
Today, in a studio in East London, childhood echoes with intensity as menstrual blood used as material now brings the smell of comfort, as well as becoming a tool to further investigate identity and meaning. Themes of beginnings and impact of origin, as well as reflection on endless cycles, of loss transmuted to nourishment, and pulsating strands that connect every living thing, remain crucial and ongoing. Teaching on the farm set in early, with a message to reach out and touch the life force, holding all that is dear close, as this inevitably goes hand in hand with letting go.
